Massachusetts Beverage Association

In the 2012-2013 legislative session, BCB was at the negotiating table with a variety of environmental advocates over changes to the bottle deposit law.  The negotiations ultimately failed and led to the filing of a ballot initiative to expand the scope and cost of the bottle deposit system.

Initial polls had the question winning by a 70%-30% split but BCB, working with the national trade association (American Beverage Association) and a superb campaign team, turned the tide in dramatic fashion.  At the end, the Question 2 was defeated 73%-27% and more people voted “No” than for or against any other question or candidate on the ballot, including Charlie Baker who won his first term as Governor.  BCB continues to advocate for sound, effective collection policy to help the Commonwealth improve its sagging recycling numbers.
